2011 saw a good selection of figures released in the Masters of the Universe Classics line, including two figures based on concept art by Mark Taylor. Some scarce two-packs also were released at retail by Toys “R” Us.
VIKOR
HE-MAN OF THE NORTH
Vikor is based on artwork by Mark Taylor. The design is thought to be a Conan concept rather than a He-Man one. The figure is very good in almost all aspects. The only error was using very stiff plastic for the cape.
ETERNIAN PALACE GUARDS
HEROIC GUARDS
The first army-builder set of the line, the Eternian Palace Guards set included two figures, four head designs and a large collection of weapons. The armour incorporates replacement chest sections.
BOW
SPECIAL FRIEND WHO HELPS SHE-RA
Bow is another character who was featured in the Princess of Power toy line. Two heads and two chest-armour inserts allow for different looks. The bow unfathomably lacked a string.
SHADOW BEAST
EVIL CREATURE OF DARKNESS
Shadow Beast is a monster race which first appeared in the original He-Man cartoon. The Classics toy reuses the Gygor body. The head sculpt attempts to look fierce but doesn’t quite achieve its goal.
PRETERNIA DISGUISE HE-MAN
MOST POWERFUL MAN IN THE UNIVERSE
Preternia Disguise He-Man (a rather clumsy name) is a He-Man variant based on a look from the final Vintage-era minicomic in which He-Man travels back in time. This was the subscription-exclusive figure for 2011.
KING HSSSS
DREADFUL DISGUISED LEADER OF THE SNAKE MEN
King Hssss dispensed with the Vintage torso-shell design and included two separate body forms. The human shoulders were reversed during assembly. The second head was included with Serpentine King Hssss in 2016.
BATTLE ARMOR SKELETOR
EVIL LORD OF DESTRUCTION
A very good Skeletor variant. The paint used on the face is simpler than the original Classics version. This reflects the design of the Vintage Battle Armor Skeletor. The chest plates replicate the original barrel design.
SY-KLONE
HEROIC FIST-FLINGING TORNADO
Classics Sy-Klone is a good interpretation of the Vintage toy. He has a red disc accessory which comes from the 200X figure. The second head was in the Heads of Eternia subscription-only accessory pack in 2015.
PANTHOR
SAVAGE CAT OF SKELETOR
The colouring on Panthor is very good; the dry-brushed shadows add a lot of depth to the figure. As with Battle Cat the head articulation is inadequate. Panthor isn’t an exact replica either – the head sculpt is different.
CATRA
JEALOUS BEAUTY
One of the wiser design decisions concerning the inclusion of Princess of Power figures in the Classics line was to step away from the original toy designs and use media source material instead. Catra is a good example.
THE FACELESS ONE
ANCIENT LORD OF ZALESIA
A curious figure which has its origins in 200X-era media. Figures such as this one are less widely known than those whose origins lie in the Vintage line, reflecting the niche interest corners of the Classics range.
BATTLEGROUND TEELA
HEROIC HEIR TO THE SORCERESS
This version of Teela is based on illustrations in To Tempt The Gods! The designers were pleased to return to the barbarian origins of the property with this figure.
CLAWFUL
WARRIOR WITH THE GRIP OF EVIL
Clawful is a favourite character who was recreated beautifully in the Classics line. The armour pieces are well designed. The second head came with the Heads of Eternia subscription-only accessory pack.
QUEEN MARLENA
HEROIC QUEEN OF ETERNIA
Queen Marlena was sold as a limited-edition figure at the San Diego Comic-Con. The figure was packaged with the same contents when sold on the Matty Collector website as Captain Glenn (Heroic Galactic Adventurer).
FAKER (BATTLE ARMOR)
EVIL ARMORED HE-MAN IMPOSTER
Faker was one of very few figures sold at retail (by Toys “R” Us in the US). He was packed with a Bizarro figure from the DC Universe Classics line. He wasn’t actually called Battle Armor Faker but uses that armour design.
STRATOS
WINGED LEADER OF AVION
This version of Stratos was sold at retail by Toys “R” Us in a two-pack with a Hawkman figure. The design reverses the wing and jetpack colours of the first Classics Stratos. This colour scheme was widely used in the Vintage line.
MER-MAN
EVIL UNDERSEA TYRANT
The Toys “R” Us Mer-Man was packaged with an Aquaman figure. He is based on the blue colour scheme used by Alfredo Alcala in three of the four Series One minicomics.
MAN-E-FACES
HUMAN… ROBOT… MONSTER
Man-E-Faces in Classics form looks much closer to his minicomic appearance than his Vintage toy. Unfortunately the sculpt of the various faces is unsymmetrical. A replacement He-Man-Skeletor-Orko face set was included.
MEGATOR
EVIL GIANT DESTROYER
Megator was originally released at the end of the Vintage line only in Europe. The Classics version is quite basic with very little articulation but works quite well. A zombie head was included with the giant figure.
LEECH
EVIL MASTER OF POWER SUCTION
Leech has a good design but would have been improved with some paint shading. The head sculpt is a good upgrade from the Vintage version.
HURRICANE HORDAK
RUTHLESS LEADER WITH WICKED WHIRLING WEAPONS
This version of Hordak replicates the look of the Vintage figure very well. The designers even included a fake thumbwheel on the back to acknowledge the original action feature. A very good Classics figure.
ICARIUS
DARING SPACE ACE
A character from the He-Man (New Adventures) spin-off line, Icarius is an uninteresting figure, although the face sculpt is quite good. The NA series was so detached from the original concept that it’s a poor fit for Classics.
SNOUT SPOUT
HEROIC WATER BLASTING FIREFIGHTER
Snout Spout looks good in Classics form but some fans encountered breakages with the trunk. The second head was not included with the figure but came with the Heads of Eternia subscription-only accessory pack.
BUBBLE POWER SHE-RA
MOST POWERFUL WOMAN IN THE UNIVERSE
A reasonably good She-Ra variant. It remains a point of curiosity that the hair design lacked shading. The obscure accessories are updated versions of those which came with the original figure from the Princess of Power line.
DEMO-MAN
EVIL SPIRIT OF DESPONDOS
Demo-Man is based on an illustration by Masters of the Universe designer Mark Taylor. It is sometimes thought to be a prototype for Skeletor but this is not the case. The included Skeletor head is based on Alfredo Alcala’s art.
BATTLEGROUND EVIL-LYN
EVIL WITCH OF ETERNIA
Battleground Evil-Lyn is based on the colour scheme used in 200X media. The sculpt reuses the Classics Teela / Evil-Lyn parts. A second head, a cloak and a two wand heads were included with the figure.
