The Sunbird Legacy is a hardback comic book written by Roger McKenzie and illustrated by Fred Carrillo and Adrian Gonzales. The evocative cover art is by Earl Norem and has absolutely nothing to do with the plot.
Western Publishing published the book under its Golden brand. They also published several short Masters of the Universe soft-cover books for young readers. The Sunbird Legacy stands apart as a tale of some depth.
The story centres on Skeletor’s plot to locate and rebuild the parts of the Sunbird, an ancient missile created by a skeletal warlord called Dyr. This character is resurrected by Skeletor to fight He-Man but is easily vanquished.
There are some memorable encounters between the Heroic Warriors and various adversaries. New races are introduced, including the Panther Men and Mer-Man’s reptilian soliders. The Sunbird Legacy is a story with merit.
I have included a scan of a reproduction of Earl Norem’s cover artwork which was sold as a limited-edition print by Super7. The painting is a celebrated example of the artist’s Masters of the Universe work. It is a fine picture.
